Santa Clara County FSC Target Audience Assesment
Posted: 04/27/2007
Please check out the attached report conducted by the Santa Clara County Fire Safe Council (SCCFSC) that is part of the Target Audience Assessment for their Assistance to Firefighters, Fire Prevention and Safety Grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
The SCCFSC Target Audience Assessment started by compiling the 2000 census demographic information for ten Zip Codes related to five of the 14 Communities at Risk from wildfires in Santa Clara County. Then three Zip Codes were selected for wildfire awareness telephone surveys. The Target Audience Assessment results are being used to target our Community Outreach and Education programs, to provide demographic and survey information for our Community Wildfire Protection Plans and to improve our grant applications.
As an example of how the SCCFSC plan to use the survey results, 94% of the residents surveyed said that they are familiar with Smokey Bear as a symbol of wildfire prevention. Among those familiar with Smokey, 99% think that he should continue to be used to educate children about wildfire safety. Based on this endorsement, SCCFSC are adding more Smokey related materials to our outreach programs. Smokey Bear materials and resources are available at www.smokeybear.com.
The Santa Clara County FireSafe Council was selected for this grant in early 2006. More information on the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Programs is available at www.firegrantsupport.com/prog/. Fire safe Councils and other non-profit organizations are eligible for the Fire Prevention and Safety Grant Programs described at www.firegrantsupport.com/fps/.
