Running a Local Council NonProfit Status Legislative Update Updates: 8/22/2003 The State Budget still has some unresolved issues regarding fire protection. CDF was left short $50 million, to be made up from a Wildland Fire Protection Fee, which is undefined and will be part of a Budget Trailer Bill. The money may come from a variety of mechanisms: a parcel fee, a fee based on assessed value, or one that treats improved and unimproved property differently. No word on who's taking the lead or when it will be heard. Also, another $10 million CDF shortfall is in the funds for reviewing Timber Harvest Plans... and again, no word on where exactly the money comes from. The Legislative Analyst Office proposes increasing the timber yield tax. In other news... The Vargas bill (already referenced on the website) is due for a vote in the Senate, and could go to a conference committee to reconcile differences in Assembly and Senate versions, or, if there are none, it could go to whoever happens to be Governor at the moment.
