UC Berkley: The Fire Safe Garden

Garden Address: The garden is located across the street from the UC Forest Products Laboratory (UCFPL) in an area that simulates the Urban-Wildland Interface, since "forest" trees are close by. The garden is currently under construction.
Sponsor: Funds to construct the garden and structure have been provided by UCFPL and the Richmond Field Station, UC Berkeley. The Garden represents the culmination of several years of work by UCFPL and others under funding by FEMA through OES and CDF. The target for completion is Spring 2000.
Wheelchair Access: Complies with handicapped accessibility
Description: The garden will serve as an example for visitors on how to help reduce the risk of losing their structures to wildland fire. It was designed to be low maintenance, aesthetically pleasing, realistic, and interactive. Included are landscape components commonly found in California homes, such as fences, raised beds, seating areas, and walkways (and complies with handicapped accessibility). All of the species used are listed as "fire resistant" from the Plant List. Four classifications of plants are included native, drought-resistant, ornamental, and edible/herb.

A 15'x20' structure is being built in the garden to represent a building at risk in the urban wildland interface. Visitors will see many examples of both firesafe and hazardous materials, and construction techniques. In addition, we will add a number of other features to the structure to show details related to deterioration protection from fungi and termites, seismic and wind hold-downs, and thermal insulation.
