Wildfire Awareness Week (WAW) is right around the corner! This annual media and public outreach campaign is designed to educate residents in California's wildlands about the need to create defensible space around their homes and properties in preparation for the impending fire season. Across the state, Fire Safe Councils are gearing up for WAW 2003, May 5-11. Participation at the local level throughout the week is essential to the success of education campaign. To promote WAW in your area, we have prepared a ready-to-use media pitch package to be used in outreach to local media to publicize your council's efforts during Wildfire Awareness Week. The following materials can be accessed using the links to the right:

  • A WAW fill-in-the-blank news release to publicize your council's WAW events
  • A 2003 grant announcement news release to publicize your council's grant award and fire safety programs
  • Proclamation copy to use in obtaining a WAW proclamation from your County Board of Supervisors
  • Three print PSA concepts for you to submit to your local media, or to duplicate and distribute as handouts in your communities during WAW and throughout fire season
  • Public education opportunity to hold "how-to" clinics at your local Home Depot
  • Fundraising opportunity to hold an On Fire! play in your community
You are encouraged to get started immediately to ensure timely coverage of Wildfire Awareness Week. We appreciate your participation in generating coverage of Wildfire Awareness Week and encouraging defensible space clearance.
